Bystander Intervention
Our Bystander Intervention training equips people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise situations where harm, disrespect or inappropriate behaviour may be occurring and consider safe, practical ways to respond. The training explores the role of the bystander, the different ways people can intervene, and how small actions can help create safer and more respectful environments.
Participants learn how to recognise early warning signs, assess a situation and choose an appropriate response based on their own safety and the circumstances. The training introduces a range of intervention strategies, including direct and indirect approaches, creating a distraction, checking in with someone, seeking support from others and following up after an incident. It also explores barriers to intervention, such as uncertainty, social pressure and concerns about making a situation worse.
Our approach is practical and interactive, using real-world scenarios to help participants develop confidence in responding appropriately. Training can be tailored to different audiences and settings, including hospitality establishments and their patrons, workplaces, community organisations, education settings and other environments where people have an opportunity to contribute to safer spaces.
Bystander intervention is about recognising that everyone has a role to play. By building confidence and giving people practical tools to act safely, organisations can strengthen a culture where respect is expected, inappropriate behaviour is challenged and people feel supported to look out for one another.
